Up, Up and Away: The Most Unusual Way to Scatter Ashes by Drone

When people think of scattering ashes, they often picture a quiet beach, a clifftop farewell, or a sailboat at sea. But at
Aerial Ashes, we believe a final farewell should reflect the
individual, not just tradition. That’s why we recently helped one family say goodbye in one of the most unusual—and uplifting—ways imaginable:
combining a hot air balloon flight with a precision drone ash scattering.

Yes, you read that right.

A Ceremony in the Sky—Literally

The idea came from the family of Graham, a retired balloonist and lifelong adventurer whose wish was to be scattered “where the clouds kiss the earth.”
They approached us through our
custom ceremony planning page to ask whether a hot air balloon might be possible.
We said yes—and then took it one step further.

On a calm spring morning, a rainbow-coloured balloon lifted gently over the Dorset hills. The family followed on the ground, watching the ascent.
But instead of scattering ashes directly from the basket—where wind and turbulence can cause unpredictable results—we deployed a
drone from the ground to meet the balloon in the sky.

The drone rose silently alongside the balloon and released Graham’s ashes at altitude in a controlled, beautiful plume. Sunlight caught the particles
as they danced in the breeze—an emotional, powerful moment no one would forget.

You can see how it works in our video tribute examples.

Why Use a Drone for Ash Scattering?

Using a drone allows us to avoid common DIY pitfalls like ashes blowing back on mourners or being scattered unevenly. Our drones offer:

  • Precision release
  • High-quality tribute footage
  • Safe, respectful delivery
  • Creative freedom to design a send-off that truly reflects the person being honoured

We’ve helped families honour lovers of the sea, keen golfers, horse racing fans, pilots, and gardeners. Whether you’re considering scattering ashes
from a boat, cliff, balloon—or something entirely unique—we can help.
