What Happens on the Day of an Ashes Scattering Ceremony?

We know this can be an emotional and uncertain time. That’s why we’ve put together a simple guide to help you understand exactly what happens — both in the days leading up to your ashes scattering ceremony, and on the day itself.

---

Checking the Weather and Planning Ahead

About a week before your ceremony, we start monitoring the weather forecast. If we see any issues — such as high winds or heavy rain — we’ll get in touch to talk through the options.

If you or others are travelling from afar, we’ll help you decide whether to:

Reschedule early, or

Keep an eye on the forecast and decide closer to the time

We’ll always be flexible and work around your needs as best we can.

Making the Final Call

A day or two before the ceremony, we’ll make a final decision based on safety and weather conditions. If it’s not safe to fly, we’ll agree a new date with you. Your peace of mind and the dignity of the occasion come first.

What Happens on the Day

We arrive at the location around 45 minutes before the ceremony to carry out:

Pre-flight checks

Safety assessments of the site

Drone setup and system testing

Once everything is ready, we’ll meet you and take a moment to go over the plan together.

The Ceremony Step by Step

Here’s how the ceremony usually unfolds:

1. Handing over the ashes You’ll hand the ashes to us, and we’ll carefully load them into the drone using a secure and respectful mechanism.

2. A moment for reflection This is your time. You can say a few words, play music, or simply take a moment together before the drone takes off.

3. Drone takeoff and flight The drone lifts gently into the sky. If you've chosen a video or livestream, we’ll capture some beautiful scenic footage of the area.

4. Ashes release When the moment feels right, the ashes are released into the wind. You can choose to press the release button yourself, or we can do it for you. The ashes gently disperse in a peaceful and natural way.

5. Return and landing The drone returns and lands safely, and we begin to pack down while giving you time to reflect and take in the moment.

After the Ceremony

Many families say they feel a real sense of peace and relief afterwards — knowing they’ve done something beautiful and meaningful to honour their loved one. We’ll usually have a short chat before we leave, and then you’re free to carry on your day. Often, people head off together for a coffee or breakfast, sharing memories and finding comfort in the moment.
